There has been a virtual explosion of social networking websites before few years. Even the major players like Google, Yahoo and MSN are becoming into it.

With therefore much interest in how social networks function, one begins to wonder if there is advertising potential within these social networks?

I’ve been seeing social networking for some time now. The truth is I am a part of numerous social-networking websites including and simply to name two.

I joined partly because I wished to see what they were, but more importantly to see on SEM what impact social media might have in-the coming years.

I have been a part of numerous ser-vices for quite a while and the reach these sites have is incredible.

For instance, from my LinkedIn network of eight people I have an expanded network of over 12,600 people.

Imagine that – I’m just a click or two away from close to 13,000 other people who share my related interests ranging from what I like to watch on TV to work I can offer to them.

Through my connections and their connections, I am attached to people including the American Cancer Society, to Sun Microsystems to the University of Texas to Google.

But what marketing possibilities are there for Social Networking?

Well, let’s take a look at MySpace.

MySpace is among the prime sites on the internet today. I-t racked up 9.4 billion page-views in August 2005 (over Google) and new customers are signing up at a rate of 3.5 million a month.

MySpace is typical of where todays 18-30 year-old visits manage their digital life. It allows people to publish photographs of themselves and their friends, create a website, list a common groups, watch and share videos, suggest things you can do and lists some people they consider friends. It is with this ‘Friends List’ where all of the opportunities lie.

All thirty million plus people of MySpace have a friends site that lists people that person considers their friend. This is a list of people who they are interested in reading from on a normal basis, as well as conversing with and about. They can send you messages, discuss your photographs, read your blogs, in addition to abandon messages that you can then tell the others when you add someone as your friend. That is the opportunity for instant feedback about you.

The capability to add friends to your site is critical for advertising to MySpace people. According to Courtney Holt, head of new media and strategic marketing at Interscope Records, ‘This technology is growing up without having ever observed programmed media. ‘They don’t think in terms of-the album, and they do not think in terms of the TV schedule. They think when it comes to TiVo, P2P, AOL, and obviously MySpace.

You can observe how this might grow.

Let us say you produce a MySpace account to speak about your product or service. You weblog about it and search for your interests that may be shared by others.

You then ask them to be your friend. When they develop into a friend you start your ‘comfortable market’ pitching your product in their mind.

As they grow to understand it, they begin blogging and discussing it. Quickly hundreds or even thousand of individuals are talking about you and your product or service.

Don’t think this will work?

Let me give some examples to you. There are numerous bands who have gotten their start on MySpace. I learned about by searching Bing. By just hosting a number of their music online and blogging about themselves they created a following. Soon they had report deals and contracts lined-up. I discovered by browsing Google Books.

Needless to say to work with services like MySpace you’ll need to have something this target audience needs. If you do not then you probably shouldn’t put too much energy in-to MySpace.

But that does not mean other social media opportunities must be overlooked. LinkedIn is more of an expert introduction service, when i mentioned above. This compelling encyclopedia has a few powerful aids for how to consider it. If your service or product meets here then by all means investigate it more.

And there are others also. Companies for example Yahoo!s MyWeb, Flickr, and more.

When you have ever wondered what other online opportunities may be on the market, consider social media. It may be the next great online-marketing channel..
